Lane: 10 Main Ave., Saco, Maine

Walk to the pier to buy your fresh “from the boat” lobster or fish from the mile long breakwater or go parasailing over Saco Bay. Rent a kayak, jet ski, charter a sailboat, or eat at one of the famous local restaurants to finish your Camp Ellis Vacation. From the beach tonight, look for the “red flasher” which was not there in 1616 to warn Dr. Vines of sharp rocks at the end of the breakwater as he approached Winter Harbor. The guiding stars for these sailors are the same as in 1616. The 5- matted schooner Washington B Thomas going to Portland, Maine passed just off Wood Island Light on the night of June 12, 1903 where the captain’s wife was washed over the side during bad weather. Her body was recovered on the beach just down the street. The schooner then anchored at the north end of Saco Bay.  Later that night, during a gale, she dragged her anchor and was destroyed on a ledge at the north end of Saco Bay. The Washington B Thomas was launched only 2 months before in Thomaston, Maine. On foggy nights, some have claimed to have seen the Captain of the Thomas walking the beach, searching for his wife.
